WHATSNEW.TXT: New WinU Features
WinU Version 3.02, released September 23, 1996
Added the Exit button type. If created on the desktop by the
administrator, user can exit WinU by clicking on the button. Like
all buttons, it can be password-protected. In Super Security mode,
Exit and Shutdown buttons will both shut down Windows 95.
Added the Shutdown button type. If created on the desktop by the
administrator, user can shut down the computer by clicking on the button.
Like all buttons, it can be password-protected. In Super Security
mode, Exit and Shutdown buttons will both shut down Windows 95.
Added button option: AutoRun This Program At Desk Logon. This starts
the program at desk logon.
Added button option: Keep Program Running Until Desk Logoff. This
starts the program at desk logon, and restarts it if necessary to
ensure that it is always running while in that desk.
Desktop buttons refresh and redisplay faster.
Desktop scrollbar works better.
Cumulative time now being tested in a more accurate way.
Added 'Are you sure' dialog, displayed only when password is not
required to exit WinU, to give a user the chance to recover from
accidentally hitting the titlebar X button.
Added code to give a shortcut to Dial-Up Networking special handling
which makes it work more reliably from the WinU desktop.
Fixed bug: status bar clock did not handle No Date setting correctly.
Fixed bug: didn't always handle MS-DOS Mode programs correctly.
WinU Version 3.01, released September 16, 1996
Removed artifacts left over from the beta version
WinU Version 3.0, released September 16, 1996
Easier system administration, especially when managing a fleet of
WinU machines on a network: clone-able buttons, desks, or entire
installations, centrally managed password and timeout control,
more detailed event logging, built-in usage reports and graphs.
More flexible visual interface options (wallpaper, button styles,
show/hide the menu and toolbar). Attach sound to WinU events.
New navigation element: DeskLink buttons. Can now run Shortcuts,
including shortcuts to printers or other Win95 components.
Inactivity timout. Cleaner tabbed-dialog interface. Status bar.
Ultra-robust Kiosk Mode for the most demanding public-access
situations. Built-in Explorer window for when you need access to
the full computer (with password control of course). Much better
when tracking modem-using apps. Blockout periods: times when
nothing on that desk will run (for example "Every Tuesday 9 pm to
11 pm" or "Every weekday 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm"). Can disable
CD-ROM autorun. QuickNotes, so you can attach a little message
to a logfile record when exiting a program (perhaps for billing
purposes). And the proverbial Much More.
WinU Version 2.0, released January 31, 1996
Numerous new features including Super Security mode, multiple
desktops, Administration Maintenance mode, settable background
color, keyboard control, highlighted focus button, right-click
Properties screens for buttons and desktops, can run multiple
programs concurrently, per-button password protection, improved
Help system, more.
WinU Version 1.0, released August 24, 1995
Initial release, on the same day that Windows 95 was released.
